Kindergarten Self Portraits

Kindergarteners did a wonderful job on this self portrait project.  The biggest problem I see across all age groups is students not making a large enough shaped face.  To solve this problem students used a stencil to create the face shape.  We did a step by step drawing as to wear all of our facial features go on our face.  Students colored them with crayon and used watercolor for the background.

6th Grade Super Heroes

6th graders explored grid drawing super heroes.  They first created a 1in by 1in grid, students then had about 8 different characters they could choose from the draw.  Here are some of the results:

 

Adaptive Art Alligators

2nd Grade Cubism Picasso Faces

2nd Graders learned about the artist Pablo Picasso.  They were fascinated and curious about the unusual faces he made.  We talked about the style of art he invented called Cubism. Cubism is a style that Picasso used to create paintings using cubes, cones, spheres and other geometric shapes.  After we looked at some of Piccaso's Cubist style artworks 2nd graders created their own using different shapes of construction paper, sharpie marker, and oil pastel.

We read this book by Jonah Winter.  This was a great book for 2nd Graders to read--they loved it!   

3rd Grade Warm and Cool Cityscapes

3rd Graders discussed warm and cool colors.  We made a cityscape by drawing arrows from the bottom of the page and extending lines from the arrowheads.

5th Grade Animal Sculptures

5th Graders were challenged with this sculpture project.  Sutdents worked through the challenge of making a 2D drawing into a 3D sculpture.  Students first sketched an animal head they would like to make, students then made an armature with newspaper and masking tape.  Students then used plaster craft strips to cover the newspaper.  When students finished they were then able to paint their sculpture.

6th Andy Warhol Pop Art Prints

6th graders learned about the artist Andy Warhol and the Pop Art movement.

We began by talking about pop culture. What is pop culture?  We discussed how things in pop culture are different now then when Andy Warhol was living and creating work.  We also discussed how my pop culture might be different then theirs.  We also discussed things that have been part of pop culture for many years like Coca-cola and other brands or food products.  After looking at some of Andy Warhol's work and discussing the process of screen printing students were challenged to come up with their own pop art inspired Warhol piece.  Students did so with the printmaking process.  The designed on a foam square and were allowed to print their image on one piece of paper using four different colored inks. Here are some of the results:

2nd Grade Color Poems

2nd Graders have discussed a lot about color this year. To continue on with the topic we looked at color in a different way.  Each student drew a color and had to write a poem about their color focusing on the five senses.  Students wrote their poem on one day and the next day to finish it off they looked in magazines and found images of their color to make a colored collage.

1st Grade Peacocks

This was a fun one day lesson in which every student was successful.  Together we drew a peacock head. Using blue and green oil pastels students practiced blending and mixing colors.  We discussed some of the cool features of the bird.  We also talked about the difference between the males and females and decided to make a male to add some beautiful feathers.
