5th graders discussed value and shading. We started out by doing shading and value exercises with pencil. We then did the same thing using color. Students were to pick an M&M character and use shading and value techniques using oil pastels to create the look of a 3D M&M. Students loved this.

I love this lesson plan, and I'm going to try it with my 5th graders next. : ) Did they only use oil pastel colors that had a light and dark already in the box, or did some have to mix in black to make it darker?
