5th Grade M&M Value Study

5th graders discussed value and shading.  We started out by doing shading and value exercises with pencil.  We then did the same thing using color.  Students were to pick an M&M character and use shading and value techniques using oil pastels to create the look of a 3D M&M. Students loved this.

  1. I love this lesson plan, and I'm going to try it with my 5th graders next. : ) Did they only use oil pastel colors that had a light and dark already in the box, or did some have to mix in black to make it darker?
